| Second Grade Curriculum | Bible / History | | | Using the Lesson Learned curriculum, second graders at ECCS journey from the foundation of the world. Their study takes them from Creation to the Flood to the Tower of Babel. From there they branch off into the major ancient civilizations--Sumer, India, China, Egypt, and Babylon. They study the Patriarchs of the Bible, study Moses and Joshua, and then move onto the Judges, King David's Reign, and the Division of Israel. They then move on to the Trojan War and the rise of the Ancient Greek Empire. History and Bible are taught in tandem and are presented to the students through various means to inspire in these young students a passion for studying history and Bible. | |
| Science | | We connect science to Bible and History by using the Bob Jones Science 2 curriculum. We study about how the earth was formed, what the earth is made of, natural forces like gravity and friction, and the solar system. We integrate our study of science with hands-on activities.

| Math | | | We use the Saxon Math Level 3 in second grade. Students participate in mental math computations, speed drills, skip counting, addition and subtraction up to 4-digit numbers, multiplication, division, and even some very basic algebra. Students usually have daily math homework assignments, as well as one weekly test. | |
| Grammar | | | The Shurley Grammar Level 2 curriculum is used to teach our students the basics of English grammar. Second graders learn grammar through chants, jingles, and sentence classification. They practice the grammar skills they learn through paragraph writing and sentence editing. Students are expected to apply the grammatical principles they learn as they write in their other subjects as well. | |
| Spelling | | | Students learn spelling through continuing the Riggs Spelling curriculum. They are encouraged to sound out words as they learn to spell the words using the Riggs-based phonics system. The phonics skills they learn in spelling are then applied in their reading process. | |
| Literature | | | Students begin the school year by reading simple basal readers such as Silver Sails and Hidden Treasures (ABeka). After the first six weeks of school, however, the students begin reading chapter books that in many cases integrate into other aspects of our curriculum: Tut's Mummy, Toby Digz: Land of the Pharoahs, The Courage of Sarah Noble, Sarah Plain and Tall, Helen Keller, and The Hundred Dresses. | |
| Penmanship | | | Second graders practice their manuscript writing skills until January, when they begin learning cursive. We use the Reason for Handwriting Transition workbook to help the students make that transition into cursive. Good penmanship is encouraged and expected not only in their work in the penmanship workbook, but in their work in every subject. In all things, students are encouraged to bring glory to God. | |
