Third Grade Curriculum
History
Third graders at ECCS study Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman history primarily. The remainder of the school year is spent studying the New Testatment Church, the writings of Paul, and historical highlights through Columbus and the Age of Discovery.  We use a curriculum entitiled "Lessons Learned" which includes songs, chants, scripture memorization, plays, and creative writing.  As the children see God's hand working throughout history, they come to a greater understanding of how magnificent He really is.  This specific time period in history grants the opportunity for special events such as Olympic Day, Greek Parade, and Mega Rome Day.  The children are able to embrace the culture of the time periods studied through hands-on interaction. It is a wonderful way to learn history!

Bible
The students in third grade at ECCS are exposed to hundreds of scripture verses throughout the year!  We believe the Bible is the most important book we can have our students memorize.  Therefore, we engage them in catechism questions and memory verses weekly.  We study the Ten Commandments and the Sacraments specifically.
What a joy it is to see children embrace God's Word with such zeal!
Grammar
The third graders at ECCS study Shurley Grammar, Level 3.  We focus on teaching the parts of speech and classifying sentences correctly.  The student learn through jingles, songs, chants, drill, and reviews.  There is also ample opportunity to apply creative writing skills through paragraph construction.  It is a terrific method of teaching the parts of speech!!
Literature

Third graders at ECCS build reading comprehension skills through their reading of the following literature:  The Cricket in Times Square, The Trojan Horse, Greek Myths, Detectives in Togas, Little Pilgrim's Progress, Misty of Chincoteague, and The Horse and His Boy.
Latin
ECCS students eagerly look forward to their first year of formal Latin trainig in third grade.  They study Schola Latin Book I, Lessons 1-13, and they have Latin class three times per week.
Science
Third graders study science using A Reason for Science, Level C. They study Life Science (Germination, Water Conservation, Eye Function, Seed Dispersal, Plant Structure); Physical Science, (natural forces and laws); and Earth Science (waves, erosion).  Students engage in hands-on demonstration and simple experimentation to learn these basic scientific concepts.
Math
Third graders use Saxon Math 54 to study math.  They participate in mental math computation, speed drills, and various math games in class.  They work one problem set per day, and have weekly tests.
Spelling
We use Riggs Level III to complete the students' study of phonics.  Spelling lists were created to review two to three spelling rules per week.  Each spelling list consists of fifteen words.  Students must mark each word phonetically, and learning to spell those fifteen words enables students to spell many more words to which those same phonics rules apply.  Students work daily spelling exercises to reinforce the rules they are learning, as well as to introduce other skills such as alphabetical order.
Penmanship
Students continue to develop their cursive letter formation skills with A Reason for Handwriting, Level C.  Students begin practicing letter formation during the first quarter of the year and then move on to connecting letters into words and writing whole sentences in cursive from the second quarter through the end of the year.
