| Fourth Grade Curriculum | History | | | Fourth graders study the history of Western Civilization from 386 through the end of the Medieval period and into the early Renaissance. The rich history of the Vikings, the early Church, the Spread of Christianity, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Reformation is taught using a card-based curriculum from Veritas Press. Students enjoy the traditional fourth grade projects and events, including building a Viking ship and participating in a Medieval Feast with their family and friends. |  |
| Bible | | | Students study the Old Testament, Chronicles through Malachi. The students learn the Biblical time-line of the Judges and Prophets, using the card-based curriculum from the Veritas Press. Additionally, students have to memorize a catechism quesiton and answer, as well as a memory verse each week. | |
| Latin | | | Students continue their study of Latin by completing Book I of Schola Latina (Lessons 13-24). They have Latin class three days per week. | |
| Math | | | Students complete the Saxon Math 65 curriculum this year. They engage in mental math computation, speed drills, daily classwork and homework assignments, and have a test every five lessons. | |
| Literature | | | Fourth grade literature is challenging, yet very exciting. The students read eleven titles, most of which complement their study of history. The highlight of the year is the students' reading of the oldest English epic poem in existence--Beowulf. In addition to Beowulf, the students read Old Yeller, The Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, Tuck Everlasting, The Door in the Wall, Thunderstorm in Church, Ink on His Fingers, Medieval Tales, Robin Hood, and Prince Caspian. | |
| Grammar | | | The fourth graders continue their study of English Grammar using the Shurley Grammar Level 4. Additionaly, composition is emphasized in fourth grade. Students write paragraphs and short essays. | |
| Spelling | | | Fourth Graders learn study spelling using A Reason for Spelling, Level E. Weekly word lists that provide examples of how to spell specific sounds in the English language are provided, along with daily exercises. Students typically have one spelling test per week. | |
| Science | | | Students learn a variety of basic scientific concepts through hands-on demonstration and experimentation using A Reason for Science Level D. | |
| Penmanship | | | Fourth graders continue to develop and refine their penmanship skills utilizing A Reason for Handwriting Level D. Students are expected to exhibit good penmanship in all their schoolwork across the subjects. | |
