A Blast from the Past:
The Back to School Sock Hop
by Anna Lyle and Amanda Holloway

Poodle skirts, bobby socks, slick-backed hair, and rolled up jeans.  Could this have been a time warp?  No, this was the fifties sock hop where rhetoric and logic school students got to fellowship and twist and shout all night. As the students walked into the gym on the night of August 18, their faces lit up seeing the place where they normally attend
P.E. classes now converted into a 50's extravaganza. The conversion was accomplished compliments of the PTF for all the students to enjoy.
The decorations were not the only item provided by volunteers. Parents and teachers attended the dance and volunteered as chaperones. Students brought many snacks and drinks for all to enjoy. Two tables were prepared with brownies, chips and salsa, and ice cold soft drinks for those who have been having a blast in the past.
Stephen Kirkland, Ryan Horton, and ALex Lanter had a sound system prepared with great music reflecting the lively atmosphere of the 50's. They had been in the gym several hours preparing for the arrival of the exhilarated students helping to decorate the gym and set up the sound board and speakers.
Teachers broke out into a limbo line and gradually students began to join. This first event broke the ice and led the new 7th grade and other new students into fellowship with the upper grades. A.J. Richardson, a 10th grade student, said, "It was a swingin' good time!"
As students came piling in and began performing their version of the twist, Mrs. Houser thought it was about time to show these private school students how it was really done back in the day (although she promises she only knows about the 50's from the movies)! After a brief explanation, soon everyone was twisting in their saddle shoes and penny loafers to the contagious dance. Mrs. Houser wasn't the only teacher "twistin' the night away." Mrs.Bell, Mrs. Collins, Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Mitchell also got in on the action. "I definitely got a work out," Mrs. Mitchell later said. "The students were much better at it than I."
Later in the evening, an even layer of 7th-10th graders were doing the jitterbug together, not paying attention to the difference in grade or age.  Mrs. Bell suggested that boys ask girls to dance to an upbeat song to acquaint new students with returning students, new students with new students, or just for some fun, quality time between two returning students.
At the end of the night all the students stayed shortly after to help clean up the gym and bring it back to the twenty-first century.  Leaving the gym and saying good-bye to friends, every student kept memories.  This Sock-Hop will definitely go down in history as the most "peachy-keen" social ever!
