Family Social / Chili Cook-Off
Friday, January 19

On Friday night, January 19, the Evangel Classical Christian School family enjoyed good food and good fellowship at the Winter Family Social and Chili Cook-off.  The evening not only provided good family fun and food for all, but it also provided an opportunity for our creative and competitive cooks to showcase their talents.  The first serving from each pot of the competitors' chili was sent to the judges, PTF officers Leigh Hill, Kristi Blackwell, Lisa Tomberlin, and Lori Johnson.  Then all the chili was placed on a long central table into either the "mild," "medium," or "hot" categories where it was available for all to enjoy.  Most people tried more than one variety, and most agreed that the chili in the hot category was, well, hot!  The evening was capped off by the announcement of the winners--Mr. Djiby Tall won third place and was awarded a $20.00 cash prize.  Mrs. Kent Herndon was awarded $30.00 for her second place chili.  Finally, our beloved second grade teacher Mrs. Alison Walker was named the first place winner and awarded the $50.00 grand prize.  "I feel like I've just won a Food Network Challenge!" joked Mrs. Walker after receiving her award.  Mrs. Lori Johnson, one of the judges, said that Mrs. Walker's chili was a good-tasting classic chili.

The evening was a huge success, with everyone in agreement that this event needs to become another annual tradition at ECCS.  Many thanks to the PTF for sponsoring this event and to Mrs. Amy Lyle and Mrs. Drew Ann Long for helping them coordinate it.  Also, special thanks goes to Mrs. Julie Hankins for painting the judges' chili-inspired aprons!

These seventh grade girls had a fun night!
There were certainly a lot of chili and soup varieties to choose from.
