Mr. Thomas Caucutt
Upper School Latin

Mr. Thomas Caucutt joined our faculty in 2004 as our Latin teacher.  Mr. Caucutt holds a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Latin from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan.  He and his wife Gabrielle and son, Hector, live in Alabaster and attend church at St. John's of Mount Laurel.  In addition to Latin, Mr. Caucutt is an accomplished musician, with special interests in Scottish and Irish folk music.  He and Mrs. Caucutt also teach fencing.  His favorite scripture comes from Hebrews 4:14 &15, "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin."

"This is the best Christian School that I know of because it truly has high academic standards, a rich liberal arts education, teachers who love to teach, students who love to learn. Faith, hope, love. We get to glorify God AND enjoy him NOW in all our classes and in all our subjects!

I get to make a living doing and teaching others to love what I love: The gospel of Christ, Latin, fencing, bagpiping, and anything else that seems to pertain to these four at any given moment.

I strive to develop the minds and character of my students under the discipline of classical languages, and to give them an opportunity to lay hold of the foundations of their common culture, government, and thought.  This is done through the study of classical history, culture and the reading of classical literature in order that they may use those gifts for the glory of God and the advancement of his kingdom.

I believe that Latin is worth studying because

a). Latin literature is worth reading. There are fascinating works of imagination, history, epic, poetry, cutting wit, drama, and political science written in Latin.

b.) reading Latin literature exposes students directly to Roman (and indirectly to Greek) culture, literature, art, history, government, and thought, all of which have had a profound influence on our own culture at the most elementary level. To understand classical culture is understand one’s own identity within the English speaking world.

c.) Latin is a good model language for study, and has immense value in preparing students to study other languages, as well as incalculable immediate value in the study of English.

d.) Latin provides an immense advantage for future studies in the fields of classics, physics, art, biology, drama, history, literature, medicine, politics, seminary, law, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian."
